The Spammer was reported and I hope he got a very stern warning from HQ.
Yesterday it happened again. The following message was left:
Great lens! I love it when I see real people writing quality lens. There is so much junk on www.squidoo.com and seeing something that is compelling to read is just awesome!
Aw, I thought, isn't that lovely. It's great to get a compliment like that. Then I read on....
More info about me can be found at: http://www.squidoo.com/LINK REMOVED
My latest project is: LINK REMOVED - www.LINK REMOVED.com
OK, this is a G-rated blog so I won't tell you exactly what my thoughts were when I finished reading. But his links were totally unrelated to the topic of the lens. So why the heck would I be interested to have these links shoved in my face?
I had two choices, just delete the comment, or I could have some fun and get my own back. I like having fun, so I chose the latter option and posted this message in reply:
I am glad you enjoyed my lens. I agree that one of the problems with Squidoo is junk and Spam. But we also have a huge problem with people leaving links to unrelated lenses and websites in Guestbooks.
I mentioned this in an email to one of my SquidPals and it turns out that he has Spammed one of her top lenses too. Looks like it is yet another serial Spammer who is working his way through the Home Page and the Top 100s. Look out everyone!
I would have liked to have left a polite but assertive comment in his Guestbook, but guess what, no Guestbook and Contact not enabled.
Ah well!

I'm not sure if it's the same guy, but I just banned someone from posting in my Guestbooks because he posted something that started as the usual "Great Lens" fluff. Then he included the link to one of his Lenses followed by a lengthily review of his own Lens, which was totally unrelated to my Lens.
I review every comment, and I don't mind people leaving links to a related Lens, and I might Lensroll or even feature it, if it's a good Lens.
Once I even allowed someone I know on Twitter to leave the address to their website in one comment because it was related to my Lens, but I have a very low tolerance to people who are pushing low-quality content and obviously spamming.
So, it wasn't anything to do with 'belly fat' was it? I used to get oodles of those before I decided to turn off the html capability for links in guestbook comments. Yes, school is out for the summer which might account for the rise in spammers -- my email was loaded with them yesterday and got another this morning who told me that they are "still waiting for me!"
I've just banned a lensmaster from posting on any of my lenses; no bio, no fans and no lenses listed. Nice enough comment until you got to the rest of it promoting his website and services! Not related to my lens at all. Ghastly stuff!
